ARTICLE - "THE TOP 10 FOODS FOR HEALTH & LONGEVITY"

We all know that eating the right foods is key to maintaining optimum health. In fact, more than 9000 scientific studies have been conducted to document the effects of different types of food on our health and they show that food is actually our best medicine! According to Jean Carper, a best selling author and contributing editor to USA Weekend health section, science has proven that these ten foods can make you healthier and help you live longer:

1.TOMATOES. These are a major source of the strong antioxidant lycopene. Lycopene reduces the risk of cancer by 40% - notably prostate, lung, and stomach cancers - and increases cancer survival. Tomato eaters function better mentally in old age and suffer half as much heart disease. Concentrated tomato sauces (found on pizza and in pasta sauces) have five times more lycopene than fresh tomatoes and canned tomatoes have three times more than fresh.

2.OLIVE OIL. It is a major part of a Mediterranean diet, shown to help reduce death from heart disease and cancer. Heart attack survivors on a Mediterranean diet had half the death rates of those on an ordinary low-fat diet, recent research shows. A famous researcher, Ancel Keys, once declared olive oil the main dietary reason for remarkably low mortality rates among Mediterranean populations. Olive oil, unlike other vegetable oils, is high in antioxidant activity.

3.RED GRAPES. This includes red grape juice and wine. Certain red grapes have moderate antioxidant power. However, purple grape juice tops other juices in antioxidant activity, having four times more than orange or tomato juice. Red wine has about the same antioxidant capacity as purple grape juice or tea. French research shows that drinking red wine in moderation increases longevity.

4.NUTS. These are one of our early evolutionary foods and ultra-compatible with survival. Recent Harvard University research found that eating more than 5 ounces of nuts a week cut heart attack deaths in women by over 40% and helped prevent deadly irregular heartbeats in men. Almonds and walnuts lower blood cholesterol. Nuts are high in fat, but most is good-type monounsaturated and/or omega-3 fatty acids.

Unsalted, fresh nuts are the best kind.

5.WHOLE GRAINS. The more whole grains you eat, the lower your odds of death, a new University of Minnesota study suggests. Middle-aged women who ate slightly more than one whole-grain food per day had a 15% lower death rate than women eating lots of refined processed grains. That calls for more whole-grain dark bread and cereals such as "all bran" and "old-fashioned" oatmeal. Whole grains contain anti-cancer agents and help stabilize blood sugar and insulin, which may promote longevity.

6.SALMON & OTHER FATTY FISH. These contain high amounts of the type of fat - omega-3 fatty acids - that performs miracles throughout the body, fighting virtually every chronic disease known. Without it, your brain cannot think, your heart cannot beat properly, your arteries clog, and your joints become inflamed. You need at least an ounce a day or two servings of fatty fish a week. Both red and pink canned salmon, sardines, mackerel, herring, and tuna are rich in the essential omega-3's.

7.BLUEBERRIES. One of the best antioxidant-rich foods, say Tufts University researchers. Blueberries are so powerful in retarding aging in animals that they can block brain changes leading to decline and even reverse failing memory. How much should be eaten? The human equivalent of the amount used in animal studies is a half-cup of frozen or fresh blueberries a day.

8.GARLIC. This herb is packed with nutrients known to help fend off cancer, heart disease, aging, and other health problems. Garlic has prolonged cancer survival time and extended animal life spans by about 5%, which in humans might add about four years, German researchers have found. A tip from researchers at Penn State: let crushed garlic "rest" about ten minutes before cooking it, to preserve its disease-fighting agents. Garlic is the featured herb in this month's "Herbal Corner" section below.

9.SPINACH. This super health-promoter is second among vegetables only to garlic in antioxidant capacity. It is also rich in folic acid, which helps fight cancer, heart disease, and mental disorders. In animals, it protects aging brains from degeneration, according to studies performed at Tufts University. New University of Kentucky research shows folic acid may help prevent Alzheimer's Disease. Both raw and steamed spinach contain high antioxidant and other essential nutrient content.

10.TEA. Green and ordinary black tea pack the same amounts of antioxidants and have equal benefits, experts say. Harvard researchers recently found that drinking one cup of black tea a day cut heart-disease risk in half. Be sure to make ice tea from loose tea or tea bags; instant tea and bottled teas contain minimal antioxidants, tests at Tufts University show.

Twenty-four hundred years ago, Hippocrates, the "father of modern medicine" said, "let food be your medicine and let medicine be your food." Today, there is overwhelming scientific evidence to suggest that Hippocrates was right on the mark!

ARTICLE - NEW PhytoZyme GUYS AND HOT TRENDS!

picture cantaloupe nutrition health news skin care wrinkles enzymes antioxidants circulation minerals picture green beans nutrition health news skin care wrinkles enzymes antioxidants circulation minerals picture oranges nutrition health news skin care wrinkles enzymes antioxidants circulation minerals
Meet Carol Cantaloupe

Cantaloupe (Cucumis melo L. var. reticulatus Naud.) is often, incorrectly, referred to interchangeably as Muskmelon. Muskmelons have been masquerading as cantaloupes in the United States for many years.

True cantaloupes are not netted, have deep grooves, a hard warty rind, and orange or green flesh. These are grown only in Europe where the population easily makes the distinction between muskmelons and cantaloupes. Muskmelons that most Americans call cantaloupes have a distinct netted or webbed rind.

This botanical group, however, includes honeydew, crenshaw, Persian, casaba and other 'mixed melons.

When Moses led the Hebrew people into the desert where they wandered for 40 years, one of the foods they craved was melons, possibly a variety of cantaloupe. In Numbers 11:5 the Hebrews remembered, "the fish, which we did eat in Egypt freely; the cucumbers, and the melons."

The bright orange color of cantaloupes is a dead giveaway that cantaloupe is loaded with an important antioxidant, beta-carotene.

Cantaloupe is also high in vitamin C, and a good source of potassium and folate
Medieval alchemists claimed that melons "promoted blood moderately, and suited phlegmatic and bilious temperaments." It was said that they relieved "the pain of calculi and cleansed the skin, but caused flux from the belly which could be treated with syrup of vinegar."

Health Benefits - A Chinese herbal claims that sweet melons cool fevers, moisten the lungs, and benefit the urine. In addition, the seeds will clear phlegm and benefit the intestines.

For a toothache caused by wind and heat, take six grams of melon skin, add water and steam till cooked. When cool, use as a mouth rinse.

With their very high beta carotene content, cantaloupes rank high as an anti carcinogenic food.

Abundant in potassium, cantaloupes may be beneficial for those with high blood pressure. Because of their high water content, they serve as a diuretic.

Meet "Cool" The Green Bean

Beans have been an important part of the human diet for thousands of years. In fact, the Bible makes reference to bean consumption, and beans have even been found in pre-Columbian tombs and the Egyptian pyramids.

It’s been said that the Egyptians had temples dedicated to beans, worshipping them as a symbol of life.

Most historians agree that beans are probably native to ancient Peru. From there, they were no doubt introduced throughout the world by soldiers who carried them as a staple of their diet as they fought ancient wars.

The American bean story begins long before Columbus discovered America, with the American Indians as far south as Florida and as far north as the Red River Valley.

In fact, maize, squash and beans were probably all cultivated in North America centuries before Columbus saw his first field of beans.

North America presented a perfect climate for the successful cultivation of beans – plenty of rainfall and long, warm summers.

As a result, by the late 1800's, American bean production had begun in earnest. Initially centered in Michigan, by World War I the demand for bean products had attracted new growers in Colorado, New Mexico, Idaho, Montana, Nebraska and Wyoming.

Green Beans are a good source of fiber and vitamin C and also contain calcium, magnesium, zinc and Vitamin A.

Also is a source of folate which supports DNA synthesis and new cell formation.

Meet Oliver Orange

Of all fruit trees, one of the best known, cultivated and studied all over the world is the orange tree. Like all the other citrus plants, the orange is a native of Asia, but the region of its origin is still involved in controversy.

Some historians say that citrus plants may have come out of the eastern part of Asia, in the regions which today include India, China, Bhutan, Burma and Malaysia.

The trajectory of orange through the world is not well known. According to most researchers, it was taken from Asia to North Africa and, from there, to the South of Europe, where it would have arrived during the Middle Ages. From Europe it was brought to the Americas during the time of the discovery of the New World, around the year 1500.

The orange spread through the world, suffering mutations and giving origin to new varieties. During the major part of this period, citrus cultivation was more like a natural development - the culture of seeds would randomly change the flavor, the aroma, the color and the size of the fruit.

Vitamin C – Oranges are an excellent source of vitamin C. Vitamin C helps prevent scurvy and also aids in the body's overall natural healing process.

Potassium – One medium orange contains 260 milligrams of potassium – 15 percent of what the FDA recommends per day. Potassium plays a key role in many important health functions. Plus it provides energy for the body, which is necessary for the body's growth and maintenance.

Folate – Oranges are a good source of folate. This nutrient helps to prevent neural tube birth defects, and guards against anemia.

Fiber – Eating a medium-size orange provides 28 percent of the recommended daily value for dietary fiber. Oranges are an excellent source, providing more fiber than any of the top 20 consumed fruits or vegetables.

Clearly important is the role of soluble fiber in maintaining already healthy cholesterol levels and promoting cardiovascular health.

ARTICLE - MINERALS AND THEIR IMPORTANCE IN NUTRITION

Minerals and Their Importance in Nutrition

The term ‘ minerals ‘ refers to elements in their simple inorganic form. In nutrition they are commonly referred to as mineral elements or inorganic nutrients.

Minerals are vital to health. Like vitamins and amino acids, minerals are essential for regulating and building the trillions of living cells which make up the body. Body cells receive the essential food elements through the blood stream. They must, therefore, be properly nourished with an adequate supply of all the essential minerals for the efficient functioning of the body.

Minerals help maintain the volume of water necessary to life processes in the body. They help draw chemical substances into and out of the cells and they keep the blood and tissue fluid from becoming either too acidic or too alkaline. The importance of minerals, like vitamins, is illustrated by the fact that there are over 50,000 enzymes in the body which direct growth and energy and each enzyme has minerals and vitamins associated with it.

Each of the essential food minerals does a specific job in the body and some of them do extra work, in teams, to keep body cells healthy. The mineral elements which are needed by the body in substantial amounts are calcium, phosphorous, iron, sulphur, magnesium, sodium, potassium and chlorine. In addition the body needs minute (trace) amounts of iodine, copper, cobalt, manganese, zinc, selenium, silicon, fluorine and some others.

MANGANESE

The human body contains 30 to 35 mg. of manganese, widely distributed throughout the tissues. It is found in the liver , pancreas, kidney, pituitary glands. This mineral helps nourish the nerves and brain and aids in the coordination of nerve impulses and muscular actions. It helps eliminate fatigue and reduces nervous irritability.

Manganese is found in citrus fruits, the outer covering of nuts, grains, in the green leaves of edible plants, fish and raw egg yolk. No official daily allowance of manganese has been established, but 2.5 to 7 mg. is generally accepted to be the average adult requirement. A deficiency of this mineral can lead to dizziness, poor elasticity in the muscles, confused thinking and poor memory.

SILICON

This is known as the " beauty mineral " as it is essential for the growth of skin, hair shafts, nails and other outer coverings of the body. It also makes the eyes bright and assists in hardening the enamel of the teeth. It is beneficial in all healing process and protects body against many diseases such as tuberculosis, irritations in mucous membranes and skin disorders.

Silicon is found in apples, cherries, grapes, asparagus, beets, onions, almonds, honey, peanuts and the juices of the green leaves of most other vegetables. No official dietary allowance has been established for this mineral. Deficiency can lead to soft brittle nails, aging symptoms of skin such as wrinkles, thinning or loss of hair, poor bone development, insomnia, osteoporosis.

FLUORINE

Fluorine is the element that prevents diseases from decaying the body. It is a germicide, and acts as an antidote to poison, sickness and disease. There is a strong affinity between calcium and fluorine. These two elements , when combined, work particularly in the outer parts of bones. They are found in the enamel of the teeth and the shiny, highly polished bone surface. Fluorine is found in goat’s milk, cauliflower, watercress, garlic, beets, cabbage, spinach and pistachio nuts.

Minerals Summary

Minerals thus play an important role in every bodily function and are present in every human cell. Although the amount needed may be small, without even the trace of the mineral , dysfunction is bound to occur at some level in the body. A zinc deficiency may show up in ridged fingernails with white spots. Lack of sulphur can cause lack-lustre hair and dull-looking skin. Less obvious deficiencies may surface as fatigue, irritability, loss of memory ,nervousness, depression and weakness.

Minerals also interact with vitamins. Magnesium, for instance, must be present in the body for utilization of B-complex, C and E vitamins. Sulphur also works with the B-complex vitamins. The body needs all the trace minerals in proper balance. Coffee, tea, alcohol, excess salt and many drugs can rope the body of minerals or make them ineffective. Industrial pollutants cause toxic minerals to enter the body. Minerals at toxic levels also have the effect of destroying the usefulness of other vitamins and minerals. Exercise improves the activity of certain vitamins and minerals while stress and fatigue work against them.

A well-balanced diet provides as abundance of minerals and vitamins. In refining cereals, grains and sugar, we have robbed them of their natural vitamins and minerals. The dietary sources of these nutrients are whole grains, cereals, bran and germ. It is the bran and germ which are removed in processing. To obtain a balance of nutrients, it is , therefore, necessary to avoid refined and processed foods but an intake of adequate green leafy vegetables which are an excellent source of many nutrients should be ensured.

THIS AND THAT

"Story -The Magic Scroll - Secret of Maximum Health."

Article written by James Sapp

In ancient times there was an adventurer who was entrusted with a scroll containing the secrets of health, youth, and longevity by a great old wise man. He was told that this secret was very time sensitive. If this secret wasn't applied on a consistent basis, it would lose it's power.

At first this great adventurer diligently applied this information but as time progressed he soon lost site of the value of the secret and rarely used it...years went by and eventually he forgot about this gift he had been entrusted with so many years ago by the old wise man. The adventurer was an old man now and just a shadow of his former strong self. Many infirmities of old age had set in and he looked like a withered old man.

At this time of his life he often thought about his glory days as a youth when he felt strong and invincible. Than one day he remembered how as a youth on one of his many journeys how he had been given a great gift of the secret of health and longevity from the old wise man. He thought to himself "where did I put that old scroll." Then he remembered he had stored it in an old chest in his attic.

Mustering all his strength he slowly climbed the steps leading up to the attic. Even though the steps were not many he had to stop several times and rest on the way up. Finally reaching the top of the steps he slowly made his way to the chest. Upon opening the chest he dusted off the old scroll and slowly opened it up. He than proceeded to read the following words:

"The following scroll contains the secrets to health, youthful energy, and longevity. However, the information contained within can't be put aside or dismissed. It must be read and studied but mostly applied on a daily basis. A person can't put this information aside and than hope to pick it up at the end of their life and expect it to perform the same magic, because at that point the magic will be gone. For there is a time limit to apply these secrets and if they are not applied they lose their ability to work."

At this point the old adventurer realized what a fool he had been. How had he come to ignore the advice written in the scroll. At this point he knew that even though it was too late for himself he must let others know these secrets before it was too late for them also.

At this point you are probably wondering what was contained in the scroll and was it really magic. Well let me say this, the information in the scroll itself, was not magic, but God has put a certain magic in each of our bodies to heal themselves.

Here is what the rest of the scroll read.

"Young man take these words and guard them with your heart. You will be given very valuable advise by experts that are concerned very much about your health. You will know in your heart rather they are right or not. You will have two choices, you can either ignore their advise or you can choose to follow it. The choice is yours but you the time to start is now and not after you have grown old and sick."

And what was the expert advise the young adventurer was given.

  • Eat at least 5-9 servings of fruits and vegetables each day.
  • Consume at least 25-30 grams of fiber daily.
  • Because you are exposed to toxins cleanse your body daily.
  • Get plenty of exercise.
  • Avoid becoming excessively overweight.
  • Drink 8 glasses of pure and non contaminated water daily.
  • Don't take life and yourself too seriously. This causes stress which can lead to early death. Instead take time to "smell the roses", laugh, love and enjoy each day.
