HEALTH BYTES

Sleeping and Back Pain -- Back and neck pain can be caused by the way you sleep. You can stress neck ligaments if you sleep on your stomach or on a pile of fluffy pillows. Sleeping on your back or side with one supportive pillow or a neck roll puts less stress on your neck and spine.

Really Weird Cure For Bad Breath --Take zinc. HealthScoutNews reports that research published in the French journal Revue De Stomatologie Et De Chirurgie Maxillo-Faciale concludes that the main cause of chronic bad breath is a group of compounds that contain sulfur. The sulfur-producing bacteria gather on the back of the tongue and on the teeth. (Mind you, chronic bad breath is caused by more than just eating onions for lunch.) Zinc apparently makes your breath smell better because it binds to the sulfur. So look for mouthwashes, gum, toothpaste, and even cold lozenges that contain zinc to zap that bad breath.

Do This One Thing. You'll Live Longer -- Scientists recently figured out that if you eat fewer calories, it could increase your lifespan by as much as 40 percent. Now they may also understand WHY: the mutations of two particular genes seem to work in tandem with a low-cal diet to orchestrate a longer life.

Eat this and you could still have a sharp memory--even in old age! -- Blueberries Pint for pint, these little blue jewels may contain more antioxidants than any other fruit or vegetable. The most powerful health-promoting compounds in blueberries are anthocyanins, phytochemicals that belong to the flavonoid family. Besides combatting the free-radical damage linked to heart disease and cancer, anthocyanins may boost brainpower—at least in rats. When fed blueberry extract for nine weeks, elderly rats outperformed a control group at such tasks as navigating mazes and balancing on rotating logs. And when aging rats ate a blueberry-enriched diet for four months, they performed as well in memory tests as younger rats. Another blueberry benefit: like cranberries, they seem to fight off urinary-tract infections by preventing E. coli bacteria from adhering to the bladder wall.

LYCOPENE, THE TOMATO WONDER --There is no question today that antioxidants are a significant part of the important nutrients we need today to support our health. One of the more newly understood of these antioxidants is lycopene. This much hailed phytonutrient is found in tomatoes. It is actually the substance that gives tomatoes their red color and, like beta-carotene, is a member of the carotenoid family.

Research on dietary lycopene suggests that it may lower the risk of heart attack. A study of over 1,300 European men indicates that those who consumed the most lycopene from foods had about half the risk of heart attack.

A five-year study of 48,000 men found that those eating ten servings per week of cooked tomato products had the lowest risk of prostate cancer. Believe it or not, their risk was only one-third that of men eating less than two servings per week. Other studies suggest that lycopene may play a major role in reducing the risk of other cancers, including cancers of the breast, rectum and colon.

And there's more. While fresh tomatoes are loaded with lycopene, cooking them makes it even easier for your body to use their lycopene. Apparently, as the tomatoes break down when they are cooked, the lycopene is more easily absorbed. Including a little fat will help, too, especially monosaturated fat like olive oil.

It is not known exactly how much lycopene one should consume each day, but based on recent studies, you would probably want to eat ten servings of tomatoes per week. Of course, supplementing for it makes sense, especially for those who don't "like" tomatoes or who just don't consume enough of them.

Special Article - ALOE-VERA NUTRITIONAL GOLD MINE!

ALOE-VERA NUTRITIONAL GOLD MINE

"Hello, my name is Ginger Scott "Health Fighter", with some Health Tips for you."

ALOE-VERA NUTRITIONAL GOLD MINE

One substance that is part of the foundation of the natural product industry is Aloe vera, which has been used since recorded history began. For its health-supporting properties, literally tons of aloe gel have been consumed by citizens of just about every country in the world. Aloe's popularity today, 25 years ago, or even 4000 years ago, is proof of the plant's benefits to its users.

Loaded with vitamins and minerals, various phytonutrients including mucopolysaccharides, enzymes, amino acids, plant sterols, anthraquinones and others, the Aloe barbadensis plant (more commonly called Aloe vera) is a virtual gold mine of phytonutrients.

One of the most exciting studies more recently completed at the University of Texas at San Antonio Health Science Center showed Aloe vera's positive effect on health.

It was the first documented, long term study of the effects of prolonged ingestion of aloe.

The primary investigator in the study had worked with aloe several years and had previously identified and patented a potent antioxidant extracted from the plant. It is rewarding to see Aloe vera take its rightful place among leading natural products, loaded with beneficial health-supporting phytonutrients.

The Aloe family includes over two hundred closely related plant species. One of them, Aloe vera has been used extensively for more than four thousand years and has sparked much interest more recently within the scientific community. The plant has leaves which can grow up to four feet in length and weigh up to five pounds each.

This gel carries the numerous water-soluble nutrients and other components throughout the plant. Think of it as the blood of the human body carrying nutrients throughout.

Aloe vera is a rich source of over two hundred naturally-occurring nutritional substances.

These components include twenty amino acids, eight enzymes, nine minerals, plant sterols, monosaccharides and polysaccharides, antioxidants, vitamins A, C, E, B-complex, glycoproteins and other substances.

Aloe vera is a virtual gold mine of health-supporting phytonutrients. Some have described the interaction of these components as similar to the synergistic workings of the instruments in an orchestra, working together for grand results.

Major universities and research groups have published volumes of reports of impressive research regarding internal uses of Aloe vera. Aloe vera helps support energy and overall activity levels and acts as a general tonic.

Most recently, scientists are beginning to understand that Aloe vera supports healthy body collagen as well. Aloe vera has become of widespread interest to athletes, sports participants and other highly active people interested in maintaining their activity levels.

ARTICLE - CAN THIS VITAMIN SLOW THE AGING PROCESS?

Can This Vitamin Slow the Aging Process?

Vitamin E supplements, especially when taken with regular exercise, may help or prevent many problems common with aging, according to research from the University of Florida that was published in the journal Biological Research for Nursing.

This is how it works:

1. Vitamin E knocks out free radicals, which are unstable molecules that can damage healthy cells and lead to the development of some 200 age-related problems.

2. Exercise boosts antioxidant substances that can combat those damaging free radicals. Put them together and it's a more powerful combination than either one used alone--and it could be the next best thing to the fountain of youth.

The study: The Florida researchers tested the two anti-aging methods on 59 men and women ages 60 to 75. None exercised regularly. They were divided into four groups:

* Group 1: Exercised twice a week for 60 minutes and took an 800 IU vitamin E supplement.

* Group 2: Exercised twice a week for 60 minutes and took a placebo.

* Group 3: Sedentary and took an 800 IU vitamin E supplement.

* Group 4: Sedentary and took a placebo.

The results: All the participants who took vitamin E--whether they exercised or not--saw a significant reduction in free radicals. In addition, exercise provided its own special protection as it increased the amount of antioxidant substances that would fight the free radicals.

So while group 1, which exercised and took the vitamin E supplements, didn't do any better than group 3, which only took the vitamin E and did not exercise, those who were active also lost weight, lowered their blood sugar and blood pressure, and boosted their exercise capacity. That led researchers to conclude that the best approach to battling the ravages of old age is a combination of moderate exercise and vitamin E.

"The results of this study suggest that people who are over 40 can benefit from regular moderate exercise and vitamin E to protect against the destructive properties of free radicals and their effects on our aging bodies," James Jessup, the study's principal investigator, said in the news release announcing the study findings.

How much vitamin E do you need for full protection? After age 40, you need the equivalent of two heads of spinach--every day. So in this case, supplements are best.

All You Ever Wanted to Know About Mushrooms and Nutrition.

Mushrooms are an ideal food - they contain almost no fat, sugar and salt but are a valuable source of dietary fiber.

Mushrooms are a good source of the B vitamins - niacin, riboflavin, thiamin, folate, vitamin B6, biotin and pantothenic acid. These vitamins are lost when vegetables are cooked in boiling water.

Niacin helps to control the release of energy from protein, fat and carbohydrate. Riboflavin is also essential for the breakdown of carbohydrate, fat and protein into energy. It is also needed for healthy skin and mucous membranes, especially those in the cornea. Thiamin controls the release of energy from carbohydrate, needed for the normal functioning of the brain and nervous system. Folate is essential for the formation of red and white blood cells in bone marrow. B6 is essential for breaking down protein for use in building new body tissue. Biotin is necessary for the release of energy from fat.

Collectively, these B vitamins in mushrooms may help to relieve stress, depression and fatigue.

Mushrooms are also one of the few dietary sources of Vitamin D - for strong healthy hair, skin and nails.

Mushrooms are a good source of the minerals potassium, selenium, copper and phosphorus. Mushrooms contain more potassium than most other vegetables and fruits. This mineral can have a positive effect in lowering blood pressure. Selenium has anti-oxidant properties, rendering harmful free radicals safe and is therefore implicated as an anti-cancer agent. Copper is a vital mineral required to make collagen. Lack of copper is linked with osteoporosis and heart disease. Phosphorus is the companion nutrient to calcium.

Mushrooms are a good source of easily absorbed, high quality vegetable protein, containing more than most other vegetables.

(Mr Rugg is trying to gain an e-commerce business marketing advantage in the health and nutrition field!)

Gee Mr. Rugg, what's that on your shoe and pants? Taking a lesson from the detergent manufactures who used to produce those giant boxes of laundry detergent to make the customer believe they were getting more for their money, Mr. Rugg comes up with the Hippo pill. This increased size is to replace their horse pills.

Eventually the public wised up and realized that most of that detergent box was just fillers and little detergent. Now those days are gone and all that can be found are small boxes of detergent. Eventually the public will wise up to your vitamins too, Mr. Rugg.

Well Mr. Rugg always seems a step slow, maybe those slow women he prefers are having an effect on him, than again it could be the cheap wine or Rambler Station Wagons he prefers.

Anyway find out more about the wonderful Life Plus products and what makes them such an exceptional value.

1. False - Actually it's fiber not antioxidants. There is a large spectrum of health benefits associated with higher dietary fiber intake, including lowering of cholesterol, smoothing out of blood sugar and insulin levels, prevention of constipation and its associated hemorrhoids and diverticulosis, as well its association with lower risk of colon cancer..

2. False - Eating more protein will help, but if you're truly serious about shedding pounds, the first thing you have to do is all in your head: Lose the excuses. That may sound easy, but it could be what makes your diet plan a success or a failure. .

3. True - President Herbert Hoover never accepted his presidential salary. Herbert Hoover has been criticized in history as a do nothing president, however his successor Franklin Roosevelt gave us the withholding tax on income tax, Social Security Tax, and the first big expansion of government programs.

4. True - That is why to keep your energy levels up it is import to cleanse your body on a regular basis. Heavy metals (lead, mercury, arsenic, chromium-6, cadmium, and aluminum), pesticides, herbicides, PCB'S, and thousands of other toxic chemicals; used chemicals that are generated by our own body chemistry; and nasty substances that come from the germs that inhabit our intestines-all need to be filtered and then transformed into a form that can be safely "handled", and be removed. This should occur before they reach levels that damage critical systems of cells, tissues, and organs in the body.

5. True - Rats can't vomit, which is why they are so susceptible to poison.

6. True - According to Louis Parish M.D., an investigator for the Department of Health and Human Services, Grapefruit Seed Extract (GSE) is as effective as any other amoebicide (amoebae killing agent) now available, and it does not cause side effects.

7. True - Lemon Pledge has more lemons in it than Country Time Lemonade.

8. True - If there are toxins in the colon all of the blood draining from the colon first passes through and must be detoxified by the liver. One plant product that has been used for over 2,000 years to support and protect the liver is found in seeds, from the milk thistle (Silybum marianum). They contain a bioflavonoid complex known as silymarin.

Milk thistle extract may protect the cells of the liver by preventing entry of harmful toxins into liver cells, and helping remove those that do get in.

9. True - The downtown city of New Orleans is five feet below sea level...

10. True- The three safest modes of transportation are ship, train and commercial airplane (in that order).
