Lyprinex is a patented lipid rich extract prepared by supercritical fluid extraction of fresh freeze dried powder made from New Zealand'’s green-lipped mussel, Perna canaliculus . The coastal dwelling indigenous people of New Zealand — the Maoris — have traditionally included liberal quantities of the green lipped mussel in their diets. Medical statistics show that the reported incidence of healthy, flexible joints by coast-dwelling Maoris, even at advanced ages is extremely high.
In the early 1970’s New Zealand green lipped mussels were included in a major U.S. screening program of marine organisms that was researching their potential for a specific health benefit. In the course of the study, which included a large number of participants, no significant activity with regard to the specific health benefit being researched was seen, but many of the study’s participants commented about their joint flexibility, range of movement, and improved function after several months use of the green lipped mussels preparation.
This, along with the observations regarding the Maori’s traditional use of this shellfish in their diet, led to a series of studies which initially produced a crude dried powder, and later (1984) a stabilized freeze dried powder with standardized activity in supporting joint health.
Further research, supported by the Australian government, identified the active components of the mussel as a lipid rich fraction which was purified as a dark yellow oil by an oxygen free process known as super critical fluid extraction that was later patented. These unique and precious extracted lipids are stabilized with the natural antioxidant vitamin E, and formulated in high quality, cold-processed olive oil media to produce Lyprinex.
The ability of this extract to support and promote healthy joint function has been found in scientific research to be 400 times more potent on a weight basis than flax oil, 200 times more potent than EPA (fish oil), 250 times more potent than unprocessed green-lipped mussel powder, and 350 times more potent than GLA, the oil found in evening primrose, borage, and black currant seed oils.
The unique lipids contained in Lyprinex are known as eicosate - traneoic acids (ETAs), members of the beneficial omega-3 family of fatty acids, that have not yet been identified in significant amounts in any other natural product. There are also at least 10 different marine sterols (another class of lipids) and more than thirty different fatty acids in addition to the ETAs, each of which may contribute to the unique effects of this unusual marine oil food.
In addition, the mussel oil extract is quite rich in a wide range of many different types of carotenoids — potent antioxidants, likely derived from the plankton upon which the green-lipped mussels feed, which give the oil its deep orange color.
These unique lipids have shown no irritating effects on the GI tract, even in enormous doses (300mg/ kg body weight — the equivalent of an average size person taking 420 capsules — nearly eight and a half bottles — of Lyprinex at one time). In clinical studies, participants have taken as much as 50 capsules a day with no ill effects.

The effects of Lyprinex may be noticeable in as little as a few weeks, but often are not evident for several months. In scientific studies using animal models of joint flexibility, amounts of Lyprinex found to be beneficial ranged from as low as 2.5 mg/kg body weight to as high as 25 mg/kg. This would translate for an average 150 lb person to a range of 3 to 30 capsules of Lyprinex a day.
